Open up a new image use the size 3x3 or higher.Make sure its transparent
Go to the pencil and draw the patterns shown in the image above.
Then go Edit-->Define Pattern and go OK.
You have just created the patterns now to apply them go to Edit-->Fill and then select pattern from the dropdown list.
Play around with the blending and be creative!
You have just applied a grid or scanlines!
